I seldom fail to finish reading a book once I begin it. But I had to throw Solace Island down after only 6 chapters. In that time the protagonist had been left at the altar by a man she had been dating for 5 years. To her complete astonishment, he had been unfaithful to her most of the time and his current flame was a woman they worked with. Only a few weeks later after more unbelievably stupid steps on her part, she meets someone new and falls for him. She seems to awaken in a new world each morning, having learned nothing from her past experience.

Unless you have an IQ below room temperature, like the protagonist, I seriously doubt you will enjoy this book.

Maggie is preparing to marry Brett, her business partner. The wedding day is set and Maggie is out partying with her girl friends when Brett calls and breaks the engagement. Shocked and hurt, Maggie gets her revenge by forcing Brett to buy her out or she’ll sell to a competitor.

Maggie thinks she can hang out in the city and recover, but her sister Eve has a better idea. Solace Island is an excellent place to recover. The Rosemary and Time cottage is perfect. Maggie does feel more relaxed. Meeting her neighbor, Luke Benson, makes the island even more attractive. Life is looking up when Maggie experiences an accident that could have killed her. Even with Luke trying to keep her safe, things are frightening. But it’s unclear why someone is after her.

This book starts out as a typical romance jilted girl meets hunky guy and they begin to get it together. However, about half way through the book the suspense builds. I didn’t care for the early part of the novel. There were amusing moments, but it was too stereotypical boy meets girl. The second half of the novel moved faster and the mystery of who was targeting Maggie got more interesting. I recommend this only if you like suspense heavily laced with romance.

Maggie Harris thought her life was all set until an odious boyfriend dumped her the eve of their wedding. Since her fiancé was also a business partner, much of Maggie’s life crumbles. She joins her sister, Eve, on Solace Island in the Pacific Northwest where they both decide now is the time for a big change. Eve has a job has that is killing her soul while Maggie needs to start her life over.

The sisters' near neighbor, Luke, who is a local bread baker, has been recovering from his own life upheaval, emotionally and physically. When he saves Maggie from being run down by a car, it becomes clear she may very well be in danger. It seems someone wants Maggie gone permanently. Maggie and Luke are very attracted to each other; however, they are both guarding their hearts after disastrous prior relationships.

This romantic suspense novel from the actress, Meg Tilly, blends passion with intrigue. Because Maggie is being stalked with deadly intent, the idyllic life on the island suddenly becomes sinister. This fraught situation pushes her into an intense state of affairs and Luke’s protective arms. SOLACE ISLAND falls more on the romantic side at times rather than suspense which, to my way of thinking, is a plus as all too often contemporary novels seem to disparage any kind of real romance.

After Maggie Harris is unceremoniously dumped by her fiancé and business partner, Brett, she joins her sister, Eve, for a vacation on Solace Island. Maggie is blindsided by Brett’s actions but she quickly bounces back and demands he either buy her out or she will sell her portion of the business. While Brett is working on securing a loan, Maggie’s broken heart heals so fast after meeting Luke Benson it will make readers’ heads spin. As she and Luke are still in the “get to know” you phase, Maggie acquires a stalker who is intent on doing her grave bodily harm. Undaunted, she and Eve embark on a life changing plan as her and Luke’s mutual attraction leads to some explicitly steamy love scenes.

Luke is a marvelous character but both Maggie and Eve are somewhat obnoxious. Eve is certain she knows what is best and she steamrolls over any and all of Maggie’s objections. Eve’s reactions are also over the top and somewhat ridiculous. Maggie’s romance with Luke would have been much more believable if there had been more time between her breaking down in heaving sobs over Brett’s betrayal and her lightning fast relationship with Luke. It is virtually impossible to buy into their lickety-split romance and headlong plunge into a very physical relationship.

The suspense element is extremely understated since this part of the storyline does not begin until about halfway into the novel. Maggie has no idea why anyone would want to harm her and she is somewhat naive when her past crashes headlong into her present. The resolution of this portion of the plot is quite unexpected once the perpetrator is unmasked.

Solace Island by Meg Tilly has an interesting plot but the pacing is slow and some of the scene transitions are very confusing. Maggie and Eve are bit immature and irritating but they are likable. Luke is surprisingly vulnerable once the truth about his past is revealed. This first installment in the Solace Island series comes to an unanticipated conclusion that will definitely surprise mystery readers.

I'm only 7 or 8 (short) chapters in & I don't know if I'll finish it. The story is adult but the writing is utterly juvenile. Seriously written as though for children if it weren't for what I assume will be sex scenes. Pretty terrible.
I enjoyed this book very much. It is a romance novel that has a twist of suspense to it. I am not a reader that rehashes what you can read on the back of the book. I think the characters are well worth the time reading the book. They are well defined and believeable, the story pulls you in within the first few chapters. I would and will recommend this book to everyone I know as a very good read. Relax and enjoy it yourself. It involves betrayal, family, new love interests for the main character “ Maggie “.
